We can change our family culture with how we do emotions.

We experience emotions every. single. day.
And they impact everything and everyone around us.
So what do YOU do when you experience them?
What do you NOT want to do when you experience them?

The ability to identify and feel our emotions is extremely important. They allow us to identify our needs, which improves our ability to have healthy relationships with others and ourselves (so we can ask for and get what we want and need).

Learning how to do emotions in a healthy way is one large piece of ending generational trauma and family dysfunction. It's learning how to do emotions and family culture different than over reacting, being explosive, ignoring, or invalidating.

But.. If we grew up in childhood trauma, family dysfunction, or even just with parents that struggle to sit in hard emotions - chances are we don't know how to feel and regulate our own emotions now.

It's possible anger scares you, because it meant harsh punishment, harm, or fear.

Maybe you feel shame or weak when you feel sad, disappointed, or cry and that you should just "get over it."

I'm here to say, you don't have to continue to feel this way about emotions. You don't have to fear or avoid them. You can learn from them and feel more connected with yourself and others, more than ever because of them.

The better we are at identifying, processing, and regulating our emotions, the better we will be able to:

Feel more in control of our experiences and reactions.

Decrease anxiety, depression, and relationship conflict.

Better able to support our children to learn how to feel and regulate their emotions.

And the list could go on and on...

The good news is we can learn to develop the ability to name, process, and regulate our emotions.. it doesn't matter what you grew up in.
